It also highlights the translocal connections between home, work and urban dwelling in Vietnam and East London. Drawing upon individuals’ private stories, I examine their journeys of migration and experiences of arrival in East London, framing the empirical materials within ideas of navigation and urban studying. Alongside a recognition of the role of the city within migrant experiences of residence, I argue that participants re-shape town through their everyday mobilities and practices of dwelling. The thesis examines connections between house and work in Vietnam, drawing upon understandings of the Vietnamese residence as a website of connection to different places and between living relations, ancestors and the spirit world.
However, informed by social-structural mechanisms that undermined company, negative experiences of residence adversely impacted remedy adherence. Conclusions Findings indicate that sense of residence might enable capacity to handle HIV care, and is promoted through emotions of safety inside, and control over, housing environments.
